Subject: Paperback Introduction to Shakespeare

For anyone interested in a paperback introduction and background to
Shakespeare, let me recommend Sam Schoenbaum's *Shakespeare: His Life,
His Language, His Theater.* I've read about a third of it, and it
appears to be a fine intro for undergraduates. Two weeks ago, I spoke
with Professor Schoenbaum and his wife Marilyn during the intermission
of Stacey Keach's performance in R3 at the Shakespeare Theatre at the
Folger. Professor Schoenbaum was delighted this book sold for less than
five bucks (4.95 US and 5.95 Canadan). It is a treasure, reflecting
the most current scholarship -- the Red Lion is credited as "the first
English custom-built playhouse" and the discovery of the remains of the
Rose is discussed. The discovery of the foundation of the Globe is not
mentioned, however.
