Subject: 2.0080 SHAKSPER: The First Eight Months and Beyond...

Ken:

Thanks for the message on SHAKSPER. I'm taking this occasion to agree
wholeheartedly. The results of the conference thus far are heartening,
and the prognosis is good. Let me add two points:

American departments of English tend not to appoint a plethora of
Shakespeareans (unlike, say, England), so communication within any
given university is perforce limited. The conference means (or will
mean) that queries, comments, even whole papers may be subject to the
sort of discussion we might only hope for within a single academic setting.

I feel this particularly strongly--my second point--because (like
some other members of the conference) I'm not in an English department
at all. Historians are even more prone to the disease of splitting
fields, so the problem of communication is even more serious for them.
I am of course in contact with friends in our English department, but I
still find useful the ability to discourse with others interested in
Shakespeare--most especially because the variety of such interests is so wide.

So my congratulations; and thanks.
