Subject: Shakespeare texts from OTA

[Although Lou Burnard is not a member of SHAKSPER, I post this
information because it is relevant to our current discussion.
More complete information can be found in the files
OXFORD ARCHIVE and OXFORD BROCHURE, which have been on the
SHAKSPER Fileserver since its inception. Please see my
response to Lou's letter in the following digest. -- k.s.]

There follows a list of the Shakespearean texts currently available from the
Oxford Text Archive. Prices and conditions are summarised very briefly here:

1. Conditions of use

Texts with a U or U* prefix are freely available for scholarly use, including
teaching and research. Texts with an A- prefix are probably also available, but
their depositor has requested us to pass all enquiries to him/her first for
vetting.

2. Cost

Our current policy is to make life easier for people who are not afraid of
using mainframes. We charge 5 pounds per title, plus 15 pounds within
Europe or 25 outside it for a mainframe tape. This means you could get the
whole first folio on a tape for 30 pounds, plus as many quartos as you fancy
for an extra 5 pounds each. If you want us to, we will transfer individual
titles to floppy disks at 15 pounds per floppy disk. This works out a bit
expensive if you want lots of titles (you can get somewhere between 2 and 5
plays on a single floppy disk depending on format) -- but if you want the
texts on floppy disk, you're probably going to work on only one or two at a
time anyway. If you want lots of them, your best bet is to order a tape and
store it at the local friendly mainframe centre (where I guess you read your
mail), downloading from it the texts you want as and when you want them. Maybe
that's not an economic proposition for some subscribers -- I don't know.

3. Modus operandi

There is an official order form, which you can download from many places, or
we'll send you one on request. Send it back with payment and we'll bung the
stuff to you by airmail within a day or two.

Sounds terribly old-fashioned and quaint, doesn't it? Wot! you cry, no FTP?
Well, I fear not, at present. We are waiting for the powers that be to connect
JANET to the INTERNET. When they do, perhaps some things will change.
