For further information regarding Micro-OCP and the Oxford University
Press Electronic Publishing modern-spelling Shakespeare, in North
America, contact:

The information comes from an old brochure, so it may not be entirely
accurate. Likewise, the information I have may not be current, but it
indicates a purchase price of $300 US for the Oxford Shakespeare, plus $10
postage & handling, and $275 US for Micro-OCP, plus $10 postage and handling.

In a letter dated February 22, 1989, Ruth Glynn, an editor at Oxford
Electronic Publishing, also indicated to me that "the release of the
old-spelling texts on floppy disk is in our plans but we have not yet
committed ourselves to their publication." I sent a follow-up query
to Dr. Glynn by electronic mail last week, and she has forwarded my
Shakespeare query to the appropriate office.

She did, however, send me answers to several similar questions about
the release of the Oxford English Dictionary II on CD-ROM, and because I
think this exciting news will be of interest to many SHAKSPEReans
(most of the OED *is* Shakespeare, after all...), I reproduce much of
Dr. Glynn's letter below.

Subject: Second Edn OED etc.

Dear Ken,

[...]

I am, however, the right person to address your OED enquiries to
as I am the Project Manager for the OED Second Edition on Compact
Disc. First things first -- WAIT TIL SPRING before spending your
shekels! The OED2 CD-ROM is due for publication in spring 1992 --
if all goes extremely well it will be available from April, otherwise
June. We intend to present it at the MicroSoft conference on the
west coast in March.

The new edition is, both from the software and text points of view,
*quite* new. It is not an upgrade or update. The text is the Second
Edition of the OED including Supplements and some corrections made to
the data since the paper publication. The software was commissioned
from AND Software in Rotterdam who have worked on various other
European dictionaries and are expert at data compression and decom-
pression.

The hardware requirements are as follows: IBM micro with 386
processor; DOS v.3.0 or higher; 2 Mb RAM; 1 Mb free hard-disk
space; Windows 3.0; mouse; (any) CD-drive; MSCDEX v.2.0 or
higher; VGA monitor.

A Macintosh version will follow the IBM version rather later in
the year. We expect there to be about 6 months' work involved
in preparing it.

Prices: pounds sterling only at the moment, but double it for
US dollars (probably). If you buy it within (probably) the
first six months of publication it will be 395 pounds; thereafter
495 pounds.

I hope you find this information helpful. If you have any further
questions on the OED2 publication, just get in touch.

Best wishes,

Ruth Glynn
Project Manager, OED2 on CD-ROM
