I believe Frederick Sternfeld published a book of settings for all the songs
in the plays edited from MS and early printed sources. None is exactly
contemporary with Shakespeare, but some are quite early as I recall.
"When that I was" has a tune dating from, again from memory, the early
eighteenth century which was supposed to be much older. It is often used,
though the BBC tape used another. A tune called "O mistress Mine" is extant
in a consort arrangement by Thomas Morley, but whether it was used in
"12th Night" or not is uncertain: it's not an uncommon Incipit for a ballad.
All this is off the top of my head, I warn you, but Sternfield
should have some answers.
