     Frances Brooke, tackling her nemesis David Garrick in her paper The
Old Maid, scoffs at the self-proclaimed champion of Shakespeare for his
choice of "the vile adulterated cup" of Tate's version.  Garrick eventually
adopted a working script closer to the original.

Actually, there was an earlier version of Lear entitled Leir in which Leir
and Cordelia both actually survive and live happily ever after.  This was
thought to have been written shortly before Shakespeare's Lear.  Circa 1605.
I don't have all the details with me now but if anyone is interested I can
bring in my source and give you more info....
