I might be coming in on the tale-end of this exchange, but it is worthwhile
considering the observation that a contemporary audience would have been
reminded that the "porter scene" looks back to earlier dramatic presentations
of the Harrowing of Hell in which Christ comes on Judgement Day. Since it is
Banquo who is knocking so loudly, the audience is invited to see him in terms
of the Christ in Judgement figure.
