Subject: Re: Query [Surnames]
Does anyone know when, where, in what circumstances, brides started taking
their husbands' surnames and when, where, in what circumstances, the practice
became institutionalized as a matter of course? I'm thinking, e.g. of the
difference between Dame Eleanor Cobham in 2 Henry VI and Mistress Ford and
Mistress Page in Merry Wives.
