I admire Smiley's work very much too. She's great on relationships in all
her writing and wonderfully so in *ATA*. I agree that it does not pay to
list the correspondences. What is wonderful about Smiley is the way she
uses some ideas (like the blinding) but then changes it unexpectedly or
she does not use another plot feature at all. Smiley strikes me as being
as original in her use of her source as Shakespeare can be with his.
