The Folger currently has a program for high school students. Those who
participate are from various schools in the D.C. area. About fifteen
students (recommended by their schools and selected by the institute) attend
a class once a week throughout the entire school year, do assignments, and,
I believe, a final paper, and receive credit for the course. A person
(different each class) involved in the current production speaks with the
group and covers a different aspect of the play or the particular Folger
production. The students also attend a researsal and see the final
The program is the High School Shakespeare Institute and the
director is Dr. Louisa Newlin (Folger Shakespeare Library, 201 East Capitol
Street, S.E., Washington, D.C. 20003 -- (202)544-4600). The program has
only been in existence a year or two, but the funding is there for it to
continue, a few more years at least, but probably not to expand it.
I did a class for the group this spring and found the participants to be really
outstanding and enthusiastic. For more information, you can contact Louisa,
a dedicated and approachable teacher herself; you may say I referred you,
if you like. Hope this information is helpful. Have a great holiday
weekend, folks.
