In "The Doubling of Parts in Shakespeare's Plays," Arthur Colby Sprague
says that "In number of actors, a London company at the end of the 16th
century, with its 8 or 10 sharers and half-dozen hired men was well off."
-- meaning of course, that there were enough people to play the roles in
Shakespeare's Histories in the 16 or so in the Company.
