For Stephen's theories see the work of Schutte, Vincent Cheng, Clive Hart, and
others who discuss them.  The issue of the second best bed is complex and may
have a legal slant that is not evident today, making it much less reprehensible
than it sounds to Stephen.  On the name of Shakespeare's son, Eric Sams has
been holding forth in recent TLS's to defend the view that Hamnet is a later
misspelling of Hamlet, which Sams suggests must have been the real name.
Stephen would not have known this, but it's not far-fetched to say he suspects
