                         Call for Papers
                 Shakespeare in Popular Culture
                    panels to be presented at

                  Culture Assocation Conference

                   October 31-November 2, 1997

Besides Shakespeare's secure place in the literary canon, the plays and
characters of Shakespeare have constantly appeared as part of American
popular culture. Papers are invited that explore how American
appropriations of Shakespeare have bridged high and popular culture in
film, television, advertising, music and theatrical productions.

In addition, it is hoped that "Shakespeare in Popular Culture" panels
will be a part of:

     Popular Culture/American Culture Association Conference
                        Orlando, Florida
                        April 8-11, 1998

Please send an abstract (minimum of 150 words) for either or both
conferences before June 1, 1997 via email <
