Michael MacDonald and Terence Murphy, in _Sleepless Souls: Suicide in
Early Modern England_ (1990), have a chapter on "The Secularization of
Suicide" with a subsection on "Elite Opinions, Plebeian Beliefs" that
may be relevant. Their chapter on "Opposition and Ambivalence" also
discusses classical attitudes, as reflected, for example, in codes of
chivalry; they cite a number of plays and prose works.

To Frank Whigham:
You might find it useful to check out Coppelia Kahn's new book, *Roman
Shakespeare* (Routledge [Feminist Readings of Shakespeare Series, Ed.
Ann Thompson], 1997).
