Subject: Branagh's Hamlet: The Video

Branagh's _Hamlet_ was released on video yesterday and I rented and
watched it. The bad news is that it's in pan-and-scan format, so you
lose the sweep of the film, not to mention some of the interesting
responses that happen at the edges of the screen, or conversations
between two people in which you had been able to see both, but now you
move between them. The good news is that the intimacy of the film is
much more apparent, especially in certain scenes. I'd still rather have
it letter-boxed myself, but will have to cope for now. The laser disc
version may be 70 mm format, but I don't know (the disc is cheaper than
the video however: about $70 as opposed to $100; I'll have to wait for
the previously viewed tapes to appear before I can add it to my
collection).
