Comment: Re: SHK 9.0062 Re: Opera Version of Hamlet

Thomas' Hamlet was done by the SF Opera the season before last. It has
one terrific bit, Ophelia's very long mad scene, which interrupts a
peasant festival-most of the festival was cut. Also, the opera's happy
ending was changed-in the original the ghost interrupts Hamlet's duel
with Laertes to remind him to get back to the business of the play, upon
which Hamlet kills the king, the ghost forgives Gertrude and sends her
off to a convent, and Hamlet ascends the throne. The 19c Covent Garden
management felt that English audiences wouldn't stand for a happy
Hamlet, so for the London production Thomas changed the ending to kill
off Hamlet. Richard Bonynge changed it yet again (Hamlet dies, the queen
doesn't), and I believe that's the version we got. It was a very
beautiful production, superbly sung.

In response to the query about F and Q productions of *King Lear*, I
posted to the SHAKSPER file server an electronic offprint of my account
of an attempt to produce Q Lear. If this is not still on the file
server, I can send an e-mail copy of the article to anyone interested.
