Subject: Jonas Barish
Anyone who has worked with Jonas Barish must have admired the man as an
intellectual, an academic, and a humane person. I worked closely with
him in 1990-91 in preparation for a seminar he directed on Shakespeare's
Prose at the Shakespeare Association of America annual meeting. I had
known him chiefly by reputation before, but I emerged from our common
enterprise with the very highest admiration for him personally. His
commendable ability to maintain discriminating standards while retaining
a humane respect for all striving scholarship-even the least
successful-is what lingers in my mind. r.i.p.

A gentleman and a scholar. We shall not look upon his like again.
