Subject:        Editor's Remarks on Authorship

Dear SHAKSPEReans,

I posted Stephanie Hughes's reply to Carol Barton as an act of fairness;
I thought that Stephanie Hughes deserved to have her say in this matter.

For me, authorship is and never has been an issue; however, when it was
discussed on SHAKSPER, the debate became repetitive, boring, and time
consuming for me as the editor. As an act of, what I considered,
academic honesty, I simply banned discussion of the topic. Oxfordians
unhappy with my decision founded the Shakespeare NewsGroup, where, when
I have visited, it appears that authorship dominates the articles.

I am not about to open the debate again - I do strive to maintain
SHAKSPER as an academic list with the appropriate amount of silliness
when it comes up.

For your information, some have responded to Stephanie Hughes. If you
are interested in what they have had to say, please contact them
privately. Below are their names and e-mail addresses.
