I would go further than Richard Burt and say <Gods and Monsters> is
brilliant.  Also, in addition to the reference that he points to at the
party scene, prior to the climax the Whale character quotes from <Lear>
and says "Pray you undo this button." I suspect that Ian McKellan and/or
Bill Condon are having fun with these references.
