I agree with David Lindley. I also tried to access the site, filled out
a questionnaire, and then was told that the registration site was busy
and that I should try again! Considering how time-consuming my first
effort was, I'm not eager to repeat the experiment without some
assurances. But I did get far enough through the registration form to
see that you can answer NO to all of the marketing questions (of course,
maybe that's why my registration was bumped off the site).

I share David Lindley's concerns about registering for ArdenNet. I have
an additional frustration. I bit the ol' bullet and tried to register.
When my proposed password was found to be taken by another, ArdenNet
told me to click the back button and try again. This took me to where I
had to fill out the registration form again. This happened twice. I
finally said, "Screw it." and bailed.

Well, OK, I didn't say Screw.

Any way around this?

I hope that others will testify to the quality of what is in ArdenNet,
as I'm bound to say it's worth registering(!). (David - one of your
colleagues at Leeds, Professor Lynette Hunter, is on the editorial
board, and I am sure she would be happy to tell you about it).

However, I would like to make one thing absolutely clear: we do not send
people unsolicited or unnecessary emails. Part of the registration
process involves telling the Arden Shakespeare whether or not you would
like to receive email from us; even if you say "yes" to this, you can
stop receiving them at any time.

Our reasons for needing people to register are laid out clearly
once you have clicked on "Register Now".

Please do not try and access or register for ArdenNet: I've just found
out that the servers on which it is hosted have been unavailable since
around 5pm EST Monday. I will send out a message as soon as the problems
are solved.

What great timing - just as I upgrade the site!

In response to David Lindley, I'm sure that Nick Kind of ArdenNet will
speak for himself about this inquiry, but my experience is that
registering on ArdenNet leads to no aggravating flood of e-mail, except
for the VERY occasional message from Nick Kind himself alerting
registrants about new developments on the site. If memory serves
correctly, even those messages come only because I chose to be
notified. I think one can opt to be left entirely alone!

ArdenNet is a site with great potential that has not quite "taken off"
yet because it is dependent on participants, that is, on all of us, to
make it a really lively and interesting site. It deserves our support,
if only we all had more time to devote to it!

Yours in creative surfing,
John Mahon

Drink, debauchery, and stychomithia with the partner of your choice
David! I'd be happy to recommend a reliable prophylactic if you so wish.

Best wishes,

I agree entirely with David Lindley. I also tried ArdenNet on the
Internet, I was put off by what seemed to be the obvious intention to
send me loads of advertising as well as other material. I also would
like more information as to what I am letting myself into.
