Subject: ArdenNet

I've been reading the various SHAKSPER postings on the subject of
ArdenNet with interest, and wanted to respond to the various issues that
have been raised:

1) I can only apologise once again for the breakdown of our servers at a
crucial moment, just as I sent out an update email. I am happy to
generate usernames and passwords for all those who have encountered
problems with their registration, so that they do not have to go through
the procedure a second time. I would be grateful if such people could
contact me off-list at <

 >.

2) It is *absolutely not* the policy of ArdenNet to share personal
information that has been made available to us in any other way than
those outlined in the licence agreement for ArdenNet, the relevant
section of which reads as follows (note: Nelson is the company which
owns the Arden Shakespeare):

"A. The information you enter in this form will be used and stored in a
database by Nelson. If Nelson wish to pass on your information to other
organisations in the future for any reason, including the enhancement of
the ArdenNet service, we will ask the Member first. However, your name
and email address will be available to other members of ArdenNet if you
make postings to any of the ArdenNet Discussion Forums. Additionally,
the registration questionnaire asks if you are prepared for your name,
title, institution, specialisms/interests and email address to be
accessible in a database shared by the community of ArdenNet members and
accessible only to them via the Internet; should you agree, this
function may or may not be implemented.
B. We may also send you one or more market research questionnaires by
email to ask for your comments on ArdenNet; filling out this
questionnaire is voluntary.
C. You may choose whether or not you wish to receive forum comments,
ArdenNet update information and/or further marketing material from us in
the registration questionnaire."

We are asking for registration for the following reasons:

1) You may want to receive comments that are posted to the various
discussions, or updates about the services which we provide in ArdenNet,
in your email. We obviously need to know your email for this!
2) We are putting up ArdenNet partly as an experiment to see what people
want out of a scholarly Shakespeare resource on the internet. You are
positively encouraged to comment on and participate in the site that we
are building. That way, we can improve the site. We can't judge the
appropriateness of people's comments or know about the type or numbers
of people who are using the site without having some details about you.
3) We need to ensure that both user and publisher are legally covered.
Your confirming that you will abide by the terms of our member
agreement forms part of the registration process and ensures that we all
know where we stand.

I genuinely feel that this is both fair and clear: please let me know if
you think otherwise. Quite ignoring the obvious ethical considerations,
it is not in my, or the Arden Shakespeare's, commercial interests to
treat the community we serve with our publications in a shoddy or
exploitative way.

     Regards,
     Nick

I'm with John Mahon. I registered with ArdenNet some time ago, and can
only say I have been somewhat underwhelmed by the e-mail I have received
from them (and I don't mean that in a negative sense). I think that
some trust must be allowed for a professional service such as the one
Nick Kind is offering. I find the page great and am appreciative of the
updates I receive. In any case unregistering is just as easy as
registering if you change your mind.

Julia MacKenzie.

Subject: ArdenNet service interruption

As you may know, the internet servers which hold ArdenNet went down on
Monday at around 5pm EST. ArdenNet is now back up and running for those
who have already registered, but registration itself is still causing
problems.

I can only apologise for the problems that you might have been having in
accessing the site and any frustration or inconvenience that has been
caused. I'd still very much encourage you to look at the new additions
to the site, in particular the pioneering Shakespeare Websearch.

What great timing for a crash - just as I upgrade the site!

Apologies once again.

Nick
