Those who resort to whacking Tate's Lear as a way of saving (!)
Shakespeare's ought to read Richard Strier's fascinating chapter on
Tate's version in Resistant Structures (California, 1996?). The play
emerges as a serious text in its own right, its alterations richly
motivated, including (not least) the ending.
