Dear Prof. Cook,
I emailed you to find out about the Shakespeare email newsgroup that you
run, and now realise that it is more suited to students and academics
than my purposes.
I am developing a television series on Shakespeare for a British
network. I'm focusing on the interconnectedness of Shakespeare and
English identity - in English history, popular culture, political
I'm also interested in the ways in which Shakespeare has been
appropriated by different interest groups to construct a certain version
of Englishness, and in the versions of Englishness that are exported to,
and perceived by, people in other countries via Shakespeare.
I realise from your application procedure that you are looking to those
in academia to participate in your group, but wondered whether you
wouldn't mind posting the above details of my area of enquiry on the
newsgroup pages, with my email address so that people can contact me
direct. I'd love to receive any thoughts on the above, or
recommendations of academics who are interested in this area, or indeed
suggestions for reading material.
Thanks very much indeed. Hoping to hear from you.
