Subject: New York CYMBELINE
Has anybody seen the Shakespeare in Central Park production of
CYMBELINE? It's worth seeing. Best things about it are IACHIMO (this was
the best IACHIMO i've seen so far, he wasn't played like some frat boy,
or some cardboard villain) and POSTHUMUS himself was pretty good (though
the first scene with him and Imogen is not very convincing-at least from
as far back as I was sitting). Imogen was pretty good. The Jupiter on
Eagle scene was kept, but could have been done better. The queen (who
was played by the woman who played the prostitute in DECONSTRUCTING
HARRY) was too theatrical flailing, and I've seen better Clotens-but-as
a whole-the play is worth seeing, especially so to let the public
theatre know that there is still an audience for Shakespeare in the Park
(and to get them to stop doing MUSICALS!)...
Also interesting that CYMBELINE was chosen by both the RSC and the
Public this year (though some would say it's an example of "dregs"
mentality, I'm beginning to think the play might be as good as THE
WINTER'S TALE, for instance....)
