The production of Richard II you were thinking of was probably the one
directed by John Barton for the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1973-4 in
which Ian Richardson and Richard Pascoe played Richard and Bolingbroke,
swapping nightly. There is a fine account of it by Stanley Wells in his
book *Royal Shakespeare* (1976).

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I am grateful to all of you for your prompt and kind responses.

The votes are unanimous-both posted here and elsewhere-that the
mid-performance switcheroo with Richard and Bolingbroke has not been
done, which is rather sad because I think it would be a neat thing to
see: sort of like having the actor who played Richard II later play
Prince Hal in the Henry IVs.

If I ever hear tell of such a RICHARD II, I will report it here. If
anyone else does, then I beg you to do likewise.

Again, my great thanks for your assistance.
