To Thelma English:

I recommend the Trevor Nunn/Philip Casson 1979 video of *Macbeth*,
starring Ian McKellen and Judi Dench, particularly if you are interested
in something other than "a filmed play."  Visually minimalist and
stylistically ritualistic, it is based on a 1976 RSC theatrical
production at The Other Place.  The acting is uniformly excellent.
Camerawork rhythms emphasize emotional rhythms.  Bulman's/Coursen's
*Shakespeare on Television* includes a reprint of Michael Mullin's *SQ*
essay, as well as some excerpts of reviews.

No, no, no, it's appalling - the slowest and most miscast version of
Macbeth I've ever seen.  How anyone could prefer it to Polanski's
atmospheric work is beyond me.  Your students must have been pulling
your leg...
