I just wanted to second Ed Taft's approval of John Velz's reading of
Iago's hatred for Cassio in terms of the conflict between officers who
rose through the ranks and those produced by military academies.  I just
wanted to add that this is exactly the period in which military
academies were coming into existence, so the argument also has
historical validity.

By the way, Cassio seems a bit defensive in the face of Iago, declaring
that the lieutenant will be saved before the ancient, for instance.  I'm
reminded of how some of my father-in-law's colleagues were annoyed that
a non-St-Syrien received his Legion d'honneur before them.
