Subject: Obscure Elizabethan Pamphleteers
Well, here's a question. And, as a long standing list member, you all
have my assurance that I am turning to the group only after having
fruitlessly ransacked all other resources immediately available.
I am in the throes of completing my doctoral thesis (after seven years,
two failed marriages, the fall of empires etc etc etc), and I am chasing
up the little bits of glue that hold the whole thing together. What I
am looking for is a little information - essentially biographical
details, background - on two pamphleteers, Geffrey Gates, author of
'Defence of the Military Profession (1579), and William Blandy, who
penned a response of sorts, commonly called 'The Castle of Commonwealth'
(1581). Bibliographic details of any book which might mention them (I
am not optimistic about this) would also be appreciated. Please direct
any information to me at <
