I must echo Karen Peterson-Kranz's reservations about the "binding
together" done by a literary tradition unreflectively assumed to be that
of "our nation".  Shakespeare indeed goes down differently outside the
US, England, and Europe.  Even in as unproud, unadmitted a colony of the
US as the current State of Israel.
