I'm almost certain there was a thread about this some years ago, so it
would be worth searching the digests.  The thread included some
bibliography, references to Elizabethan production (cf. Cambyses "a
bladder of vinegar prick't") and some modern recipes.  My favorite: Karo
syrup, 2 parts red to one part blue food coloring, Prell or Pert to aid
in scrubbing it off costumes, and chunky peanut butter for that extra
gory effect.

I recall the same reference you do but don't have the source in front of
me now.  However, if memory serves me right, the source was Henslow's
rather copious expenses records of what he purchased for his playhouse
productions.  When I can, I'll try to find the citation for you.
