Subject: Shakespeare at Swanton Website
Some SHAKSPER members may be interested in a newly mounted website
entitled "Shakespeare at Swanton" devoted to a project carried
by my advanced undergraduate Shakespeare class last quarter.
On a two and a half day field trip to Cal Poly University's magnificent
Swanton Ranch property in California's Santa Cruz mountains, the
students videotaped scenes from three plays they'd been preparing as one
part of their coursework. One group taped MND Act 3 scene 2--the
lovers's final quarrel-in the middle of a redwood forest. A second
group taped KL 4.6--the Dover Cliff scene-on a bluff high above the
pacific swells. And a third group taped WT 3.3--the Seacoast of Bohemia
scene-on the beach below. The videos were presented at a public showing
on March 9, 1999
The website contains 15 streaming video clip excerpts of the videos
produced, each between one and two minutes long and playable on
RealPlayer plug-in without long download delays. It also contains many
still pictures of the production process along with the course syllabus,
organizational materials and a sampling of student final exam essays
reflecting on their experience of approaching Shakespeare through
reading, watching performances, critical analysis and finally producing
parts of the plays themselves.
