Subject: Shakespeare Numbers

Can anyone out there supply better numbers for the various Shakespeare
communities? I'm writing a piece for Shakespeare in the Classroom, and
these estimates may be way off.

Community Audience (North America), annually Interactivity
Theatre 1,800,000 9,000 (minimal)
Film, TV, & Video 18,000,000 Nil
Secondary Schools 1,400,000 70,000 (in-class discussion, passive
note-takers excluded)
Post-secondary 250,000 200,00 (as above)
Distance Education 25,000 Minimal interaction
Active researchers 500 500 (Email, phone, conferences)
SHAKSPER listserv 1,000 300 (active, not lurkers)

[Editor's Note: I have already written to Michael, but for anyone
interested SHAKSPER's membership is approaching 1,500 from forty-six
countries. I am not even sure I could offer a number for the active
participants in SHAKSPER. I would need to have a working definition. Is
an active member one who posts daily, weekly, monthly, once or twice a
year? And even with this definition I'm not sure I could still offer an
estimate. -Hardy]
