Michael's estimate of 500 active researchers seems low to me. SAA
attracts well over 700 people, nearly all from the US. The World
Shakespeare Congress attracts over 800. The very exclusive group invited
to the International Shakespeare Conference is over 400. I would put the
world-wide figure of active Shakespeare researchers (not counting
graduate students) to be well over 2000. Unless, of course, he and I
have very different notions of what is an active researcher!
