The Stratford, Ontario production with a Fascist Italian setting was of
Merchant of Venice, using the young men of the training company in brown
shirts throughout the Venetian scenes as mute indices to an obdurate
institutionalized antisemitism within which Shylock was forced to live
and work.

This may be even more off-topic than other suggestions, but you might
want to try looking up a good biography of Mario Praz, author of
_Machiavelli and the Elizabethans_. He was born in 1896, so is probably
dead already and might be listed in one of the postwar supplements to
the _Dictionary of National Biography_.

I seem to recall that one of the more extreme authorship theories (!)
was written by a schoolmaster in 1930s Italy and promoted by the
fascists. His basic contention was that Shakespeare must have been
Italian, because his plays are set there. It might be better if anyone
who might know the name of the self-styled critic or his book were to
send it to you off-list, lest we accidentally summon the ghost of the
Earl of Oxford.

Cheers, and good luck.
