Subject: Re: Shakespeare in Italy
Dear Andrew and others: Here's another reference for you. About 49
years ago, Henry B. Sell, editor of the Town and Country magazine called
to tell me that he was going to Italy and would I please tell him where
to go and look or "Shakepeare" while he was there. I sent him a list of
place referred to in Shakespeare. When he returned he asked me to write
a 500-word article for his magazine. I told him that Shakespeare never
went to Italy, but he asked for the article anyway. I wrote it, he sent
me a pre-print. He had titled it, Shakespeare in the Veneto. I told
him that my colleagues would damn me for that. We argued and I finally
agreed to the title if he would put a question mark after the title "
Shakespeare in the Veneto? And so it appeared. I think it was in 1953
or 1954. I can't send you a copy because my mother had to proudly show
the magazine to all her friends and I never got it back. You could find
the issue in a good library. Louis Marder, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
