In London yesterday the state visit to Britain of President Jiang Zemin
of China was marked by scuffles involving protesters against China's
record on human rights. The vigorous suppression of these protests by
the police accords with President Zemin's frequently expressed
sensitivity to such activities. His view that in a civilised society
dissident voices should be kept firmly in check is evidently fully
supported by the British government. This afternoon, they have arranged
for him to visit the New Globe Theatre in Southwark.
