Subject: Pyramus and Thisbe Play
A couple of months ago I asked for help to locate a presumed printing of
the play on Pyramus and Thisbe in BM MS Adds.15227.
Kindly prompted by Peter Holland, (and assisted by our excellent library
staff), I have now obtained a photocopy. It is an article and reprint
by Eleanor Prescott Hammond, entitled 'A Pyramus-and-Thisbe play of
Shakespeare's time' in THE DRAMA: A QUARTERLY REVIEW, vol.5, No. 17,
February 1915, pp.288-300. It is the same text which Geoffrey Bullough
prints (Sources and Analogues I,411 ff.), and which he believed he was
printing for the first time. Hammond states the unsupported claim made
by Acheson for the authorship of Matthew Roydon, but herself concludes
that the MS in which the play appears is of the second quarter of the
seventeenth century; though she concedes the play itself could be
earlier, she cautiously declares 'the burden of proof would rest with
the student asserting that this little play ante-dated the comedy of
