Subject: Query

Friends,

A computerless British schoolteacher friend phoned long distance after
having seen the Trevor Nunn Merchant of Venice at the Cottesloe, partly
to gush about the production, and partly in order to ask me to identify
the melody that played during 2.5 and again at the end of the play,
which she took to be a Jewish liturgical melody of some kind. As she
could not sing it to me over the phone, and nothing I sang to her seemed
to be the thing, I was unable to identify it. Is there someone on the
list who has seen the production and can identify the melody? Thanks.

Cary
