John Velz is thinking of the 1970 film production of Julius Caesar
directed by Stuart Burge. While Gielgud does appear in the title role,
Richard Johnson-not Ron Pickup-is Cassius here. Johnson was Claudius in
the Richard Chamberlain TV Hamlet (the one that made such an impression
on the young Branagh) that same year and would later play Antony in
Trevor Nunn's Antony and Cleopatra for television. The Burge Caesar,
produced by Commonwealth United Entertainment, was released on VHS late
last year by Republic Studios. It seems to be widely available.

Cordially,
Stephen Buhler

Ronald Pickup played Cassius to Gielgud's Caesar in John Schlesinger's
1977 NT production (on the Olivier Stage). Brian Cox played Brutus and
Ian Charleson Octavius. As a late teen visiting London I was thrilled
to see this production, with what seemed like an army of supers
scattered about the house during crowd scenes, and amazed at the
opportunity to watch Gielgud from a great seat, purchased on the day of
the show for only one pound!

Best,
Don Weingust

According to the Internet Movie Database at www.imdb.com, no. Several
movies are listed for Ronald Pickup, but the 1970 Gielgud JC isn't one
of them. Richard Johnson played Cassius in that film version.

Obviously there is a subtext in this message, which is that such
information is available at the source named above. It's not 100%
complete or 100% accurate, but then neither is the OED. And unlike the
OED, if you send in a verifiable correction yourself, the information is
updated within about a week (usually). So you get to be an immediate
part of the scholarly process (if such a term may be applied to an
enterprise that lists "Saved by the Bell").
