Here (below) are translations of the (mostly) Latin labels for the
Bulwer sketches reproduced in Bertram Joseph, ELIZABETHAN ACTING.
WARNING: They were scanned from a faint print-out originally
dot-matrixed in the 1980s. They scream for correction and completion.
Please send me improvements. Michael Best, ever helpful, says he would
en-web the images and their translations. 'Twould take a bit of
image-manipulating, but they're lively images.

Also, in my earlier description of the "middle-finger salute," I see now
that I was mistaken in my reading of the image and of its Latin
descriptive tag. The image seems to be a forceful way of pointing, and
the tag says, "Conviciu~ facio." My helpful summer-school Latinists
came up with "I make an accusation." (And I was erroneously just blowing
smoke in my confusing of a raided middle finger with the "FIG" gesture.
that's an altogether different clenched hand and thumb configuration.
Seems like I need some brush-up lessons in rudeness. And I thought I'd
become fluent.)

Yikes. It's time to stop relying on fading memory and go back to a copy
of Bulwer. If fading memory serves, he gives vigorous explanations.

Ah, well. I hope no harm done.

Caught out pretending to be one of the bad boys again,

Steve Urkowitz

OK, I think it's a great idea and in fact I've been harbouring the
project to put them on the Globe website in my section on Elizabethan
actors. Could you fax me the above-mentioned copy at 00 33 1 42 21 48
06, so that my inertia is shaken? Cheers

All the best,
Chantal
