Being familiar with previous works by Updike, I was predisposed to give
the novel a chance. As a general pattern, I do not expect a 'prequel'
to mean much. But I received by Book of the Month Club version
Saturday, read the novel Monday and am about to start on a second
reading.

While it is not HAMLET, and it is not Shakespeare, it is beautifully
written and makes several suppositions that, in the context of this
novel, really work. It is well-structured and uses outstanding
description.

Overall, it is a great success. I am glad to have been among the first
to enjoy it.
