I was aware of the textual evidence, as well as of Chambers's claim that
Shakespeare wouldn't have been aware of editions in which Cordelia does
not commit suicide.  What I was looking for was the particular line of
reasoning to the effect that Shakespeare was saving Cordelia from the
"imputation" of earlier sources, that he was offering a corrective.
