I remember distinctly the editor of one of the recent editions of the
play, could well be the Cambridge edition which was the one I was using
for teaching at the time, pointing out in a very rich and informative
"Introduction", that the name "Othello" is a derivation from the Arabic
"Atallah" which, based on phonetic proximity and cultural background,
seemed to be a very persuasive guess.
