Not to be overlooked was Hal Holbrook's Shylock last year at the
Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, D.C. Playing Shylock in proud
dejection Mr. Holbrook brought a depth of Jewish culture to the part
that was fascinating and painful to watch. Mr. Holbrook somehow
conveyed the spirit of a Venetian citizen not permitted to own property
in his own state. During the performance he once recited a moving
prayer in Hebrew and no doubt benefited from his extensive consult with
a nearby Jewish Community Center.

Here is another possibility re. playing Shylock which might complement
the Barton book: in PLAYERS OF SHAKESPEARE (ed. Philip Brockbank,
Cambridge UP, 1985), Patrick Stewart talks of his experiences in
developing the role for the Royal Shakespeare.
This book and its sequel are rich sources. Michael Pennington's piece
about his Hamlet is particularly good.
