Like Jimmy Jung, I also struggle to think of a successful cuckolding in
Shakespeare, though many failed or "false" attempts exist-eg. Falstaff
and the Wives, or the "false" ideas of Cassio and Desdemona (staged in
full nudity in the Parker film's vision sequences). However,
occurrences abound in other playwrights of the period, from the "petty
treason" of "Arden of Favisham" to Allwit's willing cuckoldry in
Middleton's "Chaste Maid." It was certainly a topic of great cultural
currency, undoubtedly connected to the marriage debates etc. as well as
the economic deconstruction of patrilinear inheritance and
primogeniture. In fact, isn't there are an MLA or SAA panel proposed
for next year on exactly this topic?

Menelaus is a cuckold in Troilus and Cressida, but of course Helena's
first act of infidelity happened long before the play's opening. I
think Albany is cuckolded in King Lear. Put some money in your purses,
because the time of that bird is approaching.
