It was heartening to learn that Norman J. Myers prefaces his astonishing
course with the slogan  'This warning is issued to assure you that no
deliberate attempt to make you uncomfortable is being made'.  What a
good idea. Surely it's time for industrial-strength pieties of that
order to be emblazoned on suitable works of Shakespearean criticism?
Harold Bloom's effusions come, unbidden, to mind.
