One thing I do know about the prevalence of venereal disease at the
time, when Bartholomew Gosnold "discovered" Martha's Vineyard and the
Elizabeth Islands, he brought back a boat load of sassafras, which was
very valuable as it was thought to be a cure for syphilis.
But I'm hot on the trail for whatever has been written or published on
the subject, and will post a summary at some point. Thanks again for all
assistance and suggestions, past and future.
