Dear Professor Rosenberg,

The New Jersey Shakespeare Festival produced A&C last August. Bonnie
Monte directed, Bob Cuccioli and Tamara Tonie starred. An exemplary
interpretation, superior, I thought, to the RSC's staging in 1999, with
Alan Bates and a dreadfully miscast Frances de la Tour, who came across
as Carol Burnett. Bates seemed more like Falstaff than Antony.

I'm a rabid admirer of your MASKS. I regard them as a Shakespearean
Talmud, all those director and actors and critics talking to each other
over the centuries. I look forward to THE MASKS OF ANTONY AND
CLEOPATRA, hopeful in the near future.

Yours sincerely,
Herman Gollob

Melbourne Grammar School (which is, funnily enough, in Melbourne
Australia) is doing a production of Antony and Cleopatra in March next
year, I think. Every year they do a Shakespeare production outdoors in
their school quad and they are generally extraordinarily good. Two
years ago they did Lear and it was marvelous and before that they did
MND, which worked very well in the outdoor setting.

Perry Herzfeld.

Chicago Shakespeare Theatre opened their first season in their new
multi-million dollar space on Navy Pier last season with a production of
A&C, starring Kevin Gudahl and Lisa Dodson and directed by Barbara
Gaines. There was a huge amount of press coverage because of the new
city funded building and many visits from Shakespearean notables,
including Peters Brook and Hall. There were also a couple of programmes
on local public radio, hosted by Mark Rylance of Globe 3. The production
itself received positive critical response, but was designed mainly to
show off the new space's resources.
