Subject: Pat Historians / English Strangers

I feel stung (!) into giving the name of my dear historian George Carter
M.A. (Late head master of New College School, Oxford) and the extract I
gave from his book prepared 'for the use of candidates preparing for the
Oxford and Cambridge and other examinations'. The book was of course
'not intended to supersede the ordinary English History Text Book but
may be used advantageously along with it. I see Don Bloom wouldn't have
got into the right college with HIS attitude. Incidentally, I think
Carter's sources are usually pretty good (Parliament papers, Chronicle
Histories/ Bede etc though unfortunately there is no bibliography) and
his definition of "strangers" WAS entirely in line with that of Terence
Hawkes.

Avant ye sirrah.
