I second Tanya Gough's evocation of Theatre of Blood. I'm always tempted
to use it for my Shakespeare and Film course but never do, precisely
because one has to know Cymbeline and several other better known plays
quite intimately to get the true schlocky readings of Shakespeare. My
favorite point is the Merchant of Venice murder because they make that
"very large CUT" in the script!!! I'd love to know what Diana Rigg
remembers about filming it. I've often wondered if she was selected to
succeed Vincent Price as the host of PBS Mystery because of Theatre of
Blood.

Killer Dolphin by Ngaio Marsh springs to my mind for the detective
Shakespeare, although one needn't know any theory; just Macbeth's stage
history and superstition.

Cheers,
Susanne Collier
